Words when words are hard

How do I tell people someone has died?

You do not need to write something eloquent. People usually need three things first: what happened, who you are telling them about, and whether there is anything practical they need to know.

A simple principle

Tell the closest people personally where possible, then use one consistent written message for the wider circle. You can share funeral details later if they are not settled yet.

Very simple family message

“I’m so sorry to tell you that [Name] died [today / last night / on Tuesday]. We are still taking everything in. I’ll share arrangements when we know more.”

If the death was expected

“I wanted to let you know that [Name] died peacefully [at home / in the hospital] on [date]. We’re very sad, but grateful [brief personal note if wanted]. We will send service details when they are settled.”

Work or community notice

“We are saddened to share that [Name] died on [date]. [One sentence about their connection to the group]. Details of the funeral / memorial will be shared when available.”

Service details follow-up

“Thank you for the kind messages. The service for [Name] will be held on [date and time] at [place]. [Reception / livestream / flowers or donation information, if relevant].”

What should you leave out?

  • Medical details that the family has not agreed to make public.
  • Speculation about cause of death.
  • Funeral information that has not actually been confirmed.
  • Home addresses if the house will be empty during a service.
  • Requests for money unless the family has clearly chosen and verified the fundraising route.
Give one person permission to handle updates. A trusted relative or friend can keep a group informed, answer practical questions and stop the closest family from having to repeat the news all day.
