How to Help With a Wedding Without Taking Over

Own one job and reduce decisions.

Short answer

Own one job and reduce decisions.

Be a task owner

Choose one clearly defined responsibility such as transport coordination, collecting decorations, confirming a small group of RSVPs, handling breakfast for the wedding party, or returning rentals. Then carry it through without repeatedly asking the couple what to do next.

Respect their priorities

A low-cost wedding, small guest list, unusual ceremony or no-alcohol celebration does not need to be “fixed.” Help the couple execute the wedding they chose rather than the wedding you would choose.

On the day

Protect the couple from minor problems. A helper should know the schedule, vendor contacts and which problems genuinely require the couple’s decision.
