Write what is true
How do I write personal wedding vows that actually sound like me?
The best vows are usually specific, speakable and honest. They do not need to summarize your entire relationship.
A simple five-part structure
- Begin with recognition. What do you know and value about this person?
- Name one or two real memories. Small details often feel more personal than dramatic claims.
- Say what your relationship has taught you.
- Make promises you can actually live. Love, honesty, patience, faithfulness, listening, laughter, repair and shared responsibility.
- Finish simply. Say what it means to choose this person now.
Prompts if you are stuck
I knew this mattered when...
Think about an ordinary moment, not only the proposal or first date.
You make our life...
Safer, funnier, more adventurous, calmer, more hospitable, more honest?
When life is difficult, I promise...
Choose commitments rather than predictions about how life will feel.
I hope our home becomes...
Describe the kind of shared life you want to keep building.
Read them aloud before the wedding. Sentences that look beautiful on a screen can be hard to say when emotional. Shorten anything you cannot say naturally.
