A Serious Diagnosis: What Do We Do Next?
The first job is not to understand the entire future. It is to understand the next appointment, the immediate treatment or testing plan, the right contact person and the practical support needed this week.

Write down the next questions
- What happens next?
- How urgent is the next step?
- Who do we call with new symptoms or questions?
- What should we bring to the next appointment?
- Which information is confirmed, and which is still being investigated?
Choose one information keeper
A notebook or shared document can reduce the burden of remembering names, instructions and dates. Ask permission before recording clinical conversations.
Give supporters jobs
Meals, rides, childcare, pet care, parking, pharmacy runs and household tasks are often easier for others to own than the medical decisions themselves.
Know when the internet is not the next step
New or worsening symptoms, medication problems and urgent medical questions belong with the treating team or emergency services, not a generic planning website.
