Short answer
Older children often need predictability, small roles and reassurance that their place in the family has not disappeared.
Explain what will change
Talk about who will take them to school, where they will sleep if the birth starts at night, who will care for them, and when they might meet the baby.
Give small real jobs
A child might choose an outfit, bring a diaper, pick a story or help make a welcome sign. Avoid making them responsible for the baby’s care.
Protect one familiar ritual
Bedtime reading, a Saturday breakfast or another small routine can reassure an older child that the whole family did not vanish into baby care.
